Youth Maker Program Mentor/Manager

Engine seeks a Youth Maker Program Mentor/Manager to lead and execute Engine’s youth programs.

The ideal candidate is a combination of a teacher, mentor, maker. This individual possesses a deep desire and ability to engage youth, specifically at-risk youth. The Youth Maker Program Mentor/Manager will assume the helm of the Compass Project boat building program as well as Engine’s other youth programs. The position is managerial but also hands-on. The hire must be able to execute the program directly as well as manage the program as well, with support from the Executive Director.

Specific duties and responsibilities include: 

  • Developing, coordinating, and implementing youth maker programs, including semester and year-long in-school programs and year-round out-of-school programs. 
  • Working with a diverse demographic of alternative learners, including youth at risk of school failure.
  • Coordinating, training, and managing volunteers.
  • Record-keeping and school documentation where necessary.
  • Social media management for specific programs.
  • Maintaining and supplying organization makerspaces.
  • Promoting Engine’s youth maker programs and Engine’s mission to the general public.

Skills and Experience:

  • Proficiency in woodworking techniques, operating hand tools and digital fabrication equipment. Boatbuilding a plus.
  • Youth engagement skills, one-on-one and group management.
  • Computer literate with Google applications.
  • Design and CAD experience a plus.

Aptitudes:

  • Aptitude for learning new technology including cloud-based computer applications.
  • Outgoing, communicative.
  • Comfortable around youth, especially teens, an abolute must.
  • Creative problem-solver.
  • Comfortable and willing to work within and implement social media platforms.

Qualifications:

Specific requirements include:

  • Previous relevant field experience required;
  • Experience in a team management role an asset;
  • Demonstrated success developing and evaluating program models, and selecting and successfully operationalizing innovative programs
  • Experience developing and implementing program evaluation systems;
  • Strong project management skills managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and program growth;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to details;
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for Engine’s mission.

Duties:

  • Attend community meetings and functions.
  • Interview, manage subcontractors including executing contracts.
  • Be present for all open and education contact hours or coordinate volunteers/interns.
  • Conduct exit surveys for subcontractors.
  • Work with subcontractors to develop programs/camps.
  • Ensure successful execution of all scheduled programs.
  • Develop and maintain budgets for programs.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Timeline and Compensation:

This position is a part-time position of a maximum of 20 hours a week. No other benefits at this time. Position begins between August 12 and August 20, 2019.

There is potential to grow into a full-time position if hire demonstrates initiative and interest in growing the position.
